“It is not…necessary to avoid massage the day before or the day after chemotherapy, assuming that the practitioner is trained to adjust their work in a way that will be safe and supportive for the client.”
Gayle MacDonald

Our Mission

Oncology Massage Limited (OML) was established to train previously qualified Tactile Therapists how to safely and effectively massage any person in frail health, especially those with a history or diagnosis of cancer. Tactile therapists include Remedial Massage Therapists, Myotherapists, Bowen Therapists, Beauty Therapists, and similar.

OML does that so that safe and effective massage treatment can be made available to any person in fragile health, especially those with a history or diagnosis of cancer, regardless of where they live in Australia or New Zealand.

Our History

OML is a not-for-profit training company limited by guarantee with charity and Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. We were incorporated with ASIC and registered with the Australian Charities & Not-for-profit Commission in May/2013. We are not a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

OML encourages an integrative approach that involves all members of a person’s care and support team. Importantly, our training provides Tactile Therapists with the awareness and expertise to safely and effectively adapt their conventional treatments for a person in frail health, especially those with a history or diagnosis of cancer, while being mindful of any contraindications for that treatment.

With a nationally-standardised training program in Australia and New Zealand, OML ensures that high standards of care are met by all of our Graduates. Globally, we are the only Oncology Massage training organisation that can offer the same program across an entire country and demand the same standards of care and professionalism from their Graduates.

OML's programs are renowned worldwide, and are recognised by the Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA), the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA), and many major oncology treatment institutions including the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (VIC), the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse NSW), and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research & Wellness Centre (VIC). For further information, see here.

OML also provides ongoing support to our Graduates and Students including:

  • A suite of short-course tutorials that cover specific areas of treatment in detail

  • A publicly-accessible online database of OML-qualified therapists

  • Opportunities for personal and professional development

  • Public & Private Facebook pages where they can share issues and seek advice.

Our Performance

Apart from the obvious generic indicators around financial management, corporate compliance and marketing, OML's performance is monitored as best as we can by keeping an eye on the following:

  1. The quality of our Program Documentation

  2. The quality of our Course Facilitation Team members

  3. The number of Students interested in, and enrolling for, our Courses

  4. The number of Courses we have delivered

  5. The quality of our Courses, including feedback from:

  6. The quality of our Graduates' services, including feedback from:

  7. The numbers of people in frail health experiencing a better quality of life due to the interventions of our Graduates.
